The Dallas Group of America is the global leader in edible oil filtration, adsorbent treatment solutions, and purification solutions across many industries including commercial and restaurant frying oil operations.

 

The Research Scientist will work as a member of the Innovation and Development (I&D) Department to determine new applications for existing products, propose new products to augment DGA’s existing product lines, define and carry out tasks as necessary to lead development projects from concept to launch, and recommend and implement digital work flows for product development and laboratory processes.

The ultimate measure of this position’s success is commercialized products and applications and, therefore, add to DGA’s revenue stream. The I&D process extends beyond the laboratory to commercialization of technical innovations, on-site customer support for newly developed products and applications as well as on-going customer service. As such, travel may be required.

This role reports to the New Product Development Manager, Innovation & Development.

Responsibilities

Product and Applications Development Duties

  1. Identify potential new products and applications
  2. Review relevant scientific literature
  3. Initiate new product and application research utilizing formal Project Management fundamentals (Project Charter, Project Plan, Project Report)
  4. Prepare Project Management Reports for internal DGA
  5. Create and implement commercialization plans for new innovations
  6. Create and maintain Intellectual Property strategy for new innovations
  7. Accomplish project goals by:
      • Performing necessary laboratory work to establish technical and economical viability of new products and applications
      • Integrating the capabilities of other DGA personnel as appropriate
      • Coordinating outside laboratory testing as required

Theoretical / Practical Knowledge:

  1. Laboratory wet chemistry techniques such as titrimetric, gravimetric, and colorimetric analysis
  2. Laboratory instruments and techniques such as atomic absorption spectroscopy (AA), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), gas chromatography (GC), particle size analysis, BET (nitrogen absorption) surface area analysis, and ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy
  3. Skilled at creating, executing, analyzing and reporting design of experiments in the product development process
  4. Principles, theories, practices and methodology in evaluating, designing and completing scientific investigations
  5. Oleo chemistry
  6. Silica and silicate chemistry
  7. Adsorption and surface chemistry
  8. Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate results with appropriate interpretations, conclusions, and recommendations to both scientific and executive management
  9. Demonstrated capability to design and manage field trials
  10. Demonstrated experience in taking a project from laboratory to pilot plant to production
  11. Demonstrated experience in developing a project plan and managing it within time and outcome expectations
  12. Demonstrated experience to modify plans based upon “failure in hypothesis”

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in successful chemical development efforts
  • Demonstrated success in bringing new innovation to market
  • Computer proficiency including Windows, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Must have personal initiative, be self-motivating and possess problem solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate results along with appropriate interpretations, conclusions and recommendations.
  • Demonstrated inventiveness/creativity supported by inquisitiveness of failure
  • Demonstrated sense of urgency and initiative
  • Experience working in or supporting the food industry is a plus

Education

Minimum of MS in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering
